Masses for the Dead: For the Funeral Outside Easter Time B

Entrance Antiphon

May the Lord open to him (her) the gates of Paradise,
the he (she) may return to the homeland
where there is no death, where eternal joy endures.

Collect

O God, who are mercy for sinners
and the happiness of your Saints,
give, we pray, to your servant N.,
for whom (today) we perform the fraternal offices of burial,
a share with your chosen ones in the blessedness you give,
so that on the day of resurrection,
freed from the bonds of mortality,
he (she) may come before your face.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

Or:

O God, who have set a limit to this present life,
so as to open up an entry into eternity,
we humbly beseech you,
that by the grace of your mercy
you may command the name of your servant N.
to be inscribed in the book of life.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

Prayer Over the Offerings

Be near, O Lord, we pray, to your servant N.,
on whose funeral day
we offer you this sacrifice of conciliation,
so that, should any stain of sin have clung to him (her)
or any human fault have affected him (her),
it may, by your loving gift, be forgiven and wiped away.
Through Christ our Lord.

Preface II for the Dead
Preface III for the Dead
Preface IV for the Dead
Preface V for the Dead

Preface I for the Dead
The hope of resurrection in Christ.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

In him the hope of blessed resurrection has dawned,
that those saddened by the certainty of dying
may be consoled by the promise of immortality to come.
Indeed for your faithful, Lord,
life is changed, not ended,
and, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust,
an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven.

And so, with the Angels and Archangels,
with Thrones and Dominations,
and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven,
we sing the hymn of your glory,
as without end we acclaim:

Preface II for the Dead
Christ died so that we might live.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

For as one alone he accepted death,
so that we might all escape from dying;
as one man he chose to die,
so that in your sight we might all live for ever.

And so in company with the choirs of Angels,
we praise you, and with joy we proclaim:

Preface III for the Dead
Christ, the salvation and the life.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.

For he is the salvation of the world,
the life of the human race,
the resurrection of the dead.

Through him the host of Angels adores your majesty
and rejoices in your presence for ever.
May our voices, we pray, join with theirs,
in one chorus of exultant praise, as we acclaim:

Preface IV for the Dead
From earthly life to heavenly glory.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

For it is at your summons that we come to birth,
by your will that we are governed,
and at your command that we return,
on account of sin,
to that earth from which we came.

And when you give the sign,
we who have been redeemed by the death of your Son,
shall be raised up to the glory of his Resurrection.

And so, with the company of Angels and Saints,
we sing the hymn of your praise,
as without end we acclaim:

Preface V for the Dead
Our resurrection through the victory of Christ.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

For even though by our own fault we perish,
yet by your compassion and your grace,
when seized by death according to our sins,
we are redeemed through Christ’s great victory,
and with him called back into life.

And so, with the Powers of heaven,
we worship you constantly on earth,
and before your majesty
without end we acclaim:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Communion Antiphon

Phil 3:20-21

We await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
who will change our mortal bodies,
to conform with his glorified body.

Prayer after Communion

Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that your servant N.,
who (today) has journeyed from this world,
may by this sacrifice be cleansed and freed from sin
and so receive the everlasting joys of resurrection.
Through Christ our Lord.
